Lanikai, Oahu, seen Aug. 2009, Sep. 2010 and Nov. 2012
Lanikai is a suburb of Kailua on the windward coast of Oahu. In all these years of visiting Oahu, we never stopped here, until 2009, when we made "the discovery...". The town is located behind the Ka'iwa ridge and has only one entrance from Kailua, but no passage to Waimanalo. One way road Aalapapa leads in, makes a u-turn into Mokulua running back alongside of waterfront properties. Numerous access paths lead to the shoreline, but in the rear part of Lanikai there is really no beach at these points. See the images. I was even addressed by a distressed Japanese couple asking me at one of these paths "where is then the beach"? Well, there is one toward the entry to Lanikai, and what beach it is! The fine grain sand and the incredible vistas will not be soon forgotten! On Sep. 26 2010 a special treat awaited visitors to Lanikai: Blue Angels were performing at the near marine base of Kane'ohe. We have seen them from afar during our stop at Buzz's steakhouse at the Kailua Beach Park. |
