DDR Summer 1990

These images were taken in July 1990, one week after the adoption of the Deutsche Mark in East Germany. DDR was a closed country for tourists for decades, only certain "Transit" roads were allowed to be used. It's easy today for some to get nostalgic about the "Discreet charm of Socialism", but these images tell an other story.
Shortly after it became allowed to drive on any road and visit any place for anyone in East Germany, we explored the country from the North to the South and from the East to the West. We were shocked when we saw the conditions, not only in the countryside, but even in those beautiful, well known old towns of Germany.
These are a few images from a photo collection I created during the trip. We met a lot of lovely people, with a lot of hope of freedom and a better life after decades of oppression. Maybe not all their dreams came true in the way they hoped, but let us not allow time to beautify the reality of those 45 years in the DDR after WW2.
