Redecorating or Closing Shop at the Mall
On days when it is not possible to walk outdoors, we walk at a local indoor mall. It is noticeable that every other store is either closing for good or redecorating. Two big anchor stores,Lord & Taylor and Sears have closed completely. Macy's and JC Penny's look like they are not doing too well. There are empty shelves and many sales signs.

A piece to remind me of Country Mu sic City, Nashville, TN
Locals have renamed Nashville - Nash Vegas. I am not so sure about this. On our last trip to this place I was struck by the closed in feeling due to the high rise buildings closing in on Broadway. The Ryman Auditorium now looks like a hidden place. What's left of all the bars, museums and historical venues has taken on an almost seedy sheen. Parking prices are horrible,if you can even find a spot. Currently the Grand Ole Opry has taken on classic performances that in the past were held at the Ryman. There was no need to go downtown for us old folks.

Interesting walkway - not handicapped accessible
We visited the Great Falls of Paterson. We noticed that since the opening of this national park in 1986 little effort has been made to make this place handicapped accessible. Yes, the parking lot is accessible, but that's where it ends.

National Disrepair
The National Historic Park of the Great Falls of Paterson opened in 1986. Not much has been done to preserve this site. Windows have been busted. Pidgeons roosting everywhere. The falls and surrounding areas are protected as part of the National Park Service. Unfortunately, there is little evidence of work being done and keeping the area clean and inviting for visitor. Handicapped access is limited. There are many obstacles. While we were there we were pelted by gravel, thrown at visitors by workers doing lawnmowing and using handheld edge trimmers. It could be a great place, but it needs a lot more work.

William the Silent and what he means to Rutgers
The Huffington Post recently decreed that William the Silent, the bronze fixture on Voorhees Mall at Rutgers University–New Brunswick, is one of the “Most-Loved Statues on College Campuses.” William, one of 22 statues chosen from around the nation, is keeping some august company: Homer (University of Virginia), Abraham Lincoln (University of Wisconsin–Madison), Margaret Thatcher (Hillsdale College), First Down Moses (University of Notre Dame), and the Bruin Bear (University of California, Los Angeles), among other lights. In weighing the criteria for such lofty status, the statue was considered for its role in “students’ traditions, legends, and a penchant for pranking” and whether the statue is a “source of luck, a symbol of pride and achievement, and the world’s most trustworthy confidante.” Legend has it that William—a.k.a. Willie the Silent and Still Bill—only breaks his code of silence to whistle when a virgin walks by him.
William the Silent (1533–1584) was the Count of Nassau, Prince of Orange, and national hero of the Netherlands—appropriate for Rutgers, given its Dutch origins. The one-ton statue was a gift of Fenton B. Turck, a physician and biologist who acquired William in the Netherlands after World War I and stored him in his Manhattan laboratory for eight years. He and Leonor F. Loree RC1877 anonymously presented the statue to Rutgers through the Holland Society; William was unveiled at his present location during a ceremony on June 9, 1928.

High Point Monument and Lake Marcia
The view from High Point Monument, at 1,803 feet above sea level, is a spectacular panorama of rich farmland and forest, soft hills and lush valleys in three states. The blue line of the Delaware River divides the verdant ridges of New Jersey from those of Pennsylvania. High Point offers superb trails for hikers and skiers and quiet spots for campers and anglers.
The land for High Point State Park, donated by Colonel Anthony R. and Susie Dryden Kuser, was dedicated as a park in 1923. The pleasant landscaping was designed by the Olmsted Brothers of Boston, a prominent landscape architectural firm of that time. The brothers were the sons of the eminent Frederick Law Olmsted, who designed Central Park.
The monument is dedicated to New Jersey war veterans.

The Seven Swabians
"The Seven Swabians" is a Brothers Grimm story that apparently was the 19th Century equivalent of a "blond joke" -- but aimed at residents of a particular area of Southern Germany who were looked down upon as yokels by northerners. It concerns seven men from Swabia who seek out adventures sharing a large spear as their only weapon. Their biggest battle, before they mistakenly jump into a deep river and all drown, was with a rabbit that they somehow mistook for a dragon.
