Native Bees, Trigona sp.

Ubirr, Kakadu National Park

Known locally as "sugarbag" native bees of the genus Trigona are small, unaggressive bees which build their nests in hollow trees,
rock crevices and occasionally in termite mounds. They are of significance to Aboriginal people who used the wax produced by
these bees for art and more utilitaria purposes, as well as favouring the sweet honey.

This little colony, in a rock crevice at Ubirr, has been there since 1991 to my personal knowledge.
