Northern Long-necked turtle, (Chelodina rugosa)

Ubirr, Kakadu National Park, Australia

This turtle seemed to have got a little disorientated wandering between waterholes by the edge of the Nadab Floodplain in Kakadu. It was lucky (for the turtle) that it was found by me, not one of the traditional owners of the park, or it probably would have ended up as that night's dinner The Aboriginal people of Kakadu still enjoy a dish of turtle as they have for thousands of years as after all, turtles are relatively easy to find and catch, they are fat, and they come in their own casserole dish!
