This hill-station was the former capital of colonial India, before New Delhi. At 2230m asl, it was a summer retreat for colonial officers of the day, and continues to be a major holiday destination even now. The former viceroy's residence is known as Wildflower Hall, about 15km away from the city centre - now reconstructed as an ultra luxury resort hotel, with ultra high prices!! The city is only accessible by 5 hr train journey (popularly known as a 'toy' train) which weaves thru the mountains and breathtaking scenery along the way. Shimla has expanded significantly over the years and habitations now sprawl along the terrainous geography, like an unkempt carpet.
