Great clarity! I'm a stone sculptor so I scan the internet for photos of wildlife. The red tail hawk is going to be challenging due to it's relatively small beak. I just need a detailed photo of their feet and back and i'm all set!

Thank you for the awesome pictures. I walked out my front door and found a bird that I thought was a hawk standing in the front yard "just chillin". I have been arguing with someone who was convince that it was not a hawk because we live in the city, but I was fairly certain. Your pictures capture the majesty of this bird with such clarity that I can with all certainty say that I had a beautiful red-tailed hawk in my front yard. They are even more beautiful in the wild with the backdrops of nature rather than buildings. Thanks again.

Thank you for these gorgeous photos. I have been searching for a red-tailed hawk to create a program for my husband's memorial service. The red-tail was his totem bird. Your photos capture not only detail and clarity, but also the character of the birds. I love them.

I found this link by searching the net for a good monopod/ballhead combo for the canon 100-400 lens. I am fascinated by hawks and can spot them miles away. I bought the above mentioned lens for taking pics of hawks so this man just won my heart! I have the fever and wish I could walk out of my office now to hit the woods. Our family loves the red-tailed hawk. This year we had a nesting pair near our home, and our son photographed the nest with eggs, and got some shots of the youngsters after they fledged. We saw one parent bathing in our pond on two occasions, and often see them hunting our plentiful supply of squirrels, etc. I wrote some stories for our 6-yr-old grandson featuring the red-tail. It's been a real treat viewing your photos, and they will be awesome addition to the educational section at the end of my books.

I am so excitedI found your website. This past weekend there were tow pairs of these hawks making a lot of noise in our neighborhood. One pair left the vicinity and the 2nd pair has a nest in my own yard at the top of a pine tree. Thank You for posting these pics. I live in South Mississippi, and I didnt know what kind of hawks are in my yard.

A wonderful collection and dedication of time and effort. Very comprehensive. Three or more days a weeks, I drive a 50 mile corridor on I-82 here in Eastern Washington, much of which follows our Yakima River, through rich agricultural land and am priveledged to see a variety of hawks, falcons, osprey and bald eagles, among so much other wildlife along the way. The biggest thrill though was a species returning to our area, White Pelicans. Spectacular arial "ballet" shows when they socialize together several times a day. After all how many ducks and geese can one watch? Many times the Pelicans and Hawks can be seen soaring the thermals on either side of the road. Makes it difficult to keep driving without wanting to stop and watch and snap pictures.

these images are fucking cool.dude you should take more pics of hawks this year.if i had to give you a grade of all the pictures you took i would give you a A+.you are the most asome person i have ever seen take such a good picture all my life!!!!These pictures are unbelievable. I don't know what else I can say that does them even the slightest bit of justice. I can only hope that someday my wildlife photos can come close to maGene, you share the same passion as I do, hawks! I work with hawks and herons around the area just north of Milwaukee, and get my fill of cranes at the Horicon and Necedah refuges in Wisconsin. If I were to come down sometime to photograph in your area, are there any favorite locales you could suggest? I could also return the favor if you were ever coming up here. Maybe get together for a shoot sometime.

Beautiful..... Unfortunately, I killed one the other day - it was a freak accident....... I was driving normally, on a 2 lane street in the suburb here in Los Angeles, when I saw a Hawk swoop low across the road, and I thought "There it goes" - when all of a sudden, it swooped a little bit too low, and smacked the car to the left and in front of me by about 50 yards on its window, and was thrown up in the air in my direction! I hit the brakes but it was too late - it hit my car squarely on the front edge of the hood right between the lights and went careening to the right of me, all broken and writhing....... the poor thing...... I could do nothing as 3 cars behind me all hit their brakes and came screeching to a halt as they all saw what happened - but we all drove on, as the thing stopped moving within a few seconds or so..... what could I do? And it wasn't the first time that I hit a bird while I was driving, either!

These are the most incredible photos I have ever seen. I am SUCH an amateur....but you are amazing. I would love to know the lens you use for these bird shots! Gene, I finally did it! I got close enough to an "urban" red tail and snapped a few. I am light years behind your shots, but if you have a minute please check out my Oregon Bird Pics and lend some thoughts. Even during rush hour, they are sooo skittish. A jogger can pass by when they are perched on the light post, but when I walk up with my 70-200 f2.8L + 2X TC, they FLY AWAY!!!!!!!! Anyway, I have your pics in mind everytime I see one, you have some really great shots. For those that don't know, Gene has incredible skill to capture these....... 400mm is nothing when dealing with such cautious and easily spooked creatures.
