Gene, It's pleasant and amazing experience of browsing through these great pictures. Among the pictures, I am aware of some pictures are taken by 100-400mm and extension tube. I do own the same lense too, but I just can't get such a nice and clear shot as you did. Any suggestions or tips? Ps, my camera is 30D, and Kenko 1.4x extension. Yes, I know, but the way I've processed frames on photos is to take an 800x600 and add the frame around them. would be difficult to do any other way, since I want to have unframed photos as well.

The sharpness, clarity and colour of your pictures is astounding! Do you have to do any post-processing or is this as they come from the camera? Either way your skill at obtaining the shots is unquestionable!

Gene, these are fantastic images. Absolutely brilliant! I read your note stating that pbase will downsample and make the pictures blurry. That is very true. The way to get around this is to resize your original image so your longest edge is equal to or less than 800 pixels. Then pbase will not downsample. There will be no "large" option. The default will always be your original. You can preview this in my gallery at pbase.com/anandm. Thanks ...

Awesome-Stunninh-Breathtaking!!!!! I could fill up this comment section with many more Wonderful adjectives to describe your Gorgeous Bird Photography Gene, but simple said, you have the Best Collection of Quality Wildlife Portfolios I've ever seen!! I too have the 100-400L, but have not been real pleased with the Sharpness issues! Sent it and my DRebel to Canon for calibration, but still find I need Bright Sunlight to get tach Sharp Focus!! You Do Extremely Well with the 400mm f5.6! Brilliant Color, Tach Sharp Imagery and Great Exposures in what looks to be less than Stellar lighting conditions! For the 400mm long end, does it really out perfom the Zoom that much?? Does it auto focus with the TC1.4II? Thanks for Sharing All Your Great Work with Us! Any insight with your experience will also be Appreciated!! Ted

Jack H. You are correct. Thta statement in my header was outdated. Up until I got the 500 (with the 100-400 and 400 prime), almost all of my shots were hand-held. Though I do shoot quite a few 500 hand held. The majority are tripod or braced.

Your images are beautiful and tight sharp and you use "no flash". Now, here is my question:....Are you trying to imply that you are hand helding a 500 mm lens and are using slow shutter speeds of 1/125 sec. on some images that are tight sharp?.....Even with IS! a 500mm lens hand held will look a little soft, besides, no one can hand held such a lens for very long withouth an injury due to its weight. When you say "hand held" you imply that you are holding the camera body with your right hand and supporting the lens with your left, right? Most bird photographers "swear" on a tripod or a good bean bag so I presume that you use some kind of support; maybe not a tripod, but a bean bag or something. ....... Please explain this to me.....it is hard to swallow! Jack Hubbard, MD.

Tim, I usually use evaluative. And yes, Egrets require between -.5 and -1.5 EC depending on the background and closeness. If you have a background darker than the Egret and it is much larger area than the Egret, then you will need around -1 EC because the metering will weight the dark background in and tend to overexpose the Egret. I rarely use partial - if partial were smaller, i.e. real spot metering, then I would use it more. Evaluative usually gets it right sans some small highlights or large background/subject tonal differeences, and I've gotten accustomed to how it responds in these situations. One of my goals this year is to get good at manual exposure.

Gene, I'm really curious what metering mode you normally use on your bird shots. The biggest challenge for me is getting a shot that has enough detail, without blowing out highlights. I find that shooting white egrets often requires -EV of up to a whole stop for me, but I think this is the opposite of what one would expect. But I say this admitting that I almost always use evaluative metering. Maybe I'm missing something here, and should be using partial metering instead, considering that the bird would normally be in the center of the frame. Any thoughts??

Gene, This gallery amazes me. I have never seen such a stunning collection of bird images all in one place. The sharpness and clarity is second to none. I am curious if you ever use flash for bird photography. I noticed that your exif data says not, but I have learned lately that sometimes all the exif data on pbase is not always completely accurate. These photos are really outstanding! I am just getting into wildlife photography and would like to know your opinion on the 400 5.6 vs 100-400. I have a 70-200 2.8 IS and a 1.4 extender but need something longer. Has the lack of IS on your 400 hampered you at all? I see that you use both with vary good results but if you had to pick one, which would it be? Again I have really enjoyed your photos-Keep up the good work!

Beautiful photos, really outstanding. You should divide your galleries into smaller galleries or groups. It takes too long to download the way it is now, and you wouldn't want viewers to click past your work.

I don't know which images you are talking about specifically. In general, I disagree. In some specific instances I may have cropped some more, but not much. In some the shutter speed might not be up to snuff, and in others the AF might not have locked. You'll have to be more explicit. Gene

Gene, Can't find your email in your profile here and dpreview, so I am dropping a message here. It seems that your in flight shots are not as sharp as still shots. Do you agree with that? What has caused this? (I am having this problem now.). Because in -flight shots are further away, so there is a big crop on images, or AF can not pin the in flight objects? Yes, they are compatible. If you use the Canon and I think also the Sigma TC, then you will lose autofocus unless you tape off a couple of the pins on the TC. With the cheaper Tamron 1.4x, you don't need to tape any pins. I assume that is also true with the Tamron 2x. I have only the Tamron 1.4x. You can use any or all AF points. You lose 1 stop with the 1.4x, and 2 with the 2x. I personally don't have a use for the 28-300, especially at that price. I need more reach. If I shoot below 100, which I recently haven't much, but will with the coming spring, I use my 28-135 - thats good enough for my uses (floweres, etc.). - Gene

Gene, since you have use the 100-400mm so extensively, are both the 1.4x and 2x compatible? if so the IS still works at all lengths? and only the center focus point works for the extenders right? I understand it will lose 2 stops. Do you like the idea of the NEW 28-300mm f3.5-5.6L IS? This is $1k more than the older 100-400mm! I need something 200-400 or a little more. Thanks for your help. This is one of the finest collections of bird photography I have seen on this site. I enjoyed every single shot you have displayed. I too have a Canon 10D and have been eyeing up the 100-400 lense. After seeing this gallery I am positive I want to try my hand/eye out using it as well, though I am sure I will get no where near your level of shooting with it. You have a very keen eye for the subject matter and composing the shot.
