Early in 1912 Mr Luke Wright offered this Try Pot to Canterbury museum.
On 22 January the director and staff travelled by launch from Akaroa to the Wright's old whaling station on Island Bay on Banks Peninsula.
After much effort they were able to get the pot down to the edge of the water.
However it was too heavy to get into the launch's dinghy.
Returning the next day with shear legs, block and tackle,
the team managed to get the pot into the dinghy,
which was then towed by launch into the open sea.
The dinghy began to ship water, so Haynes (the museum's taxidermist)
was lowered into the stern to bail the boat.
Eventually they reached safety
and the Try Pot was shipped around to Christchurch and then to the museum.
