Zion Canyon National Park

Tough for me to capture well. Extreme shadow/highlight contrast, the awesome size and sheerness of the canyon walls...really difficult for me to capture. The cottonwood trees in the canyon saved the day. The way they handled the lighting and offered a perspective balanced out the difficulties ...to a degree. Thanks for visiting and taking a look. I hope it was worth the time.

Gerard: you are correct about the sun just about determining all the color in Zion. The red/brown is there, but as in so many instances the angle of the sun/time of year makes all the difference. This is more spectacularly true in Bryce Canyon where, depending on it's angle the sun can show the hoodoos as anything from yellow through red to almost maroon. On a cloudy day they may well be a dull brown. If you look at the first climber shot in Zion you will see different color manifestations side by side in identical light.. The header shot gives a clue as to the effect of light on this stone, both in foreground left and background right. Thanks for the comment/clarification. Ciao! John

Definitively you are an artist, and nature is wonderfull.
Many thanks for sharing your picts with us.
I was in Zion area in 1998 and 2005, and I can say that there is here absolutely NO dominant brown/reds on the color of the rock. This color is depending of the position of the sun.
