Praying Mantis

I didn't realize these guys were so big! And I thought that they were only green, but I looked online and saw some others this color. The mantis was on my gate in a vertical position, so I rotated the image for a better look at it. This is the first one I have seen around here.

That is a gorgeous shot of him, Vern! I've only ever seen a couple of these. Great find, and winning shot.

Ooops, meant green in wet areas.

Great photo of it!did you know they change colors based on whether they are in a dry or more wet environment? Low humidity and dry surroundings and they turn brown, green plants and higher humidity and they turn brown.

Nice Vern! Beautiful color in this mantis! Just curious -- did you have to crop this quite a bit? It looks like there's a lot of noise and it's only ISO 200

They look like something out of a 1950's sci-fi/horror movie. ;-)

You are so lucky Vern! I had two mantis eggs hatch and released them outside early this summer but I have only seen a couple of small ones. I usually bring a large on in the house for my critter cage and photo ops. Some varieties go through color changes, but there are different varieties in different colors also. They do change a little based on what they are sitting on. Here is one of my cooperative house models: http://www.pbase.com/pooh4jvn/image/128497863

Good photo of it. We see quite a few every year. A friends son kept one (apparently female) in an aquarium in his room and his mother was quite excited to find one day that there were at least 50 tiny versions walking all over the bedroom wall!

Wow, this is fantastic!!
Clarence King19-Sep-2012 12:44
Nice shot Vern, good closeup fine detail. From what I have read they are green if the season is wet and brown if the season is dry. v
