Shoe With No Feet

This may just be a shoe. But I think it has a really very interesting story to tell. The represantation of the shoe for it's state being dirty, worn out and left behind speaks for itself.

I always wonder how people lose a shoe ... you just see them sometimes, all lonely, without their partner, and i wonder, where is your friend now? or is there someone walking around with one shoe on and one shoe off?

You use incongruity, abstraction and human values here, Tricia, to tell a story and move the imagination of your viewers. You show less, and say more. You abstract the scene to include just the shoe and the dirt --there is nothing else in the image to distract the viewer from the point at hand. It is incongruous in that what was once pink and beautiful and treasured is now dirty, discolored, torn, and forgotten. It expresses several human values: poverty (the shoe was worn so long and so hard because its owner may have had no other); decay ( the conditon of the shoe); sordid (the world here seems to be one of dirt, muck, grime -- a hard life; and sorrow (the image symbolizes misfortune, suffering, difficulty of life.) It is metaphorical as well -- as a symbol, the bright pink color suggests beauty, yet the context in which the pink is seen is anything but beautiful. Anytime we turn beauty to ugliness, the contrast can astonish, wound, and linger. As for the story this image tells, you leave that up to each of your viewers. That is the great power of expressive photography, Tricia. It rests not in the picture itself -- the picture is a trigger to the imagination of the viewer. And that is where the image truly rests.
