Huerfano County was one of seventeen original counties created in Colorado Territory in 1861. It encompassed nearly all of the Mexican St. Vrain land grant. It occupied almost all of the southeast quadrant of the state except for the Arapahoe and Cheyenne Indian Preserve. Its land was at times claimed by Spain, Mexico, France, the Texas Republic and various Plains Indians. In 1861 the county was divided into five townships and precincts, with the County Seat at Autubis (Autobees) Ranch near the junction of the Cuchara and Arkansas Rivers. The Indians were quickly dispossessed, and over the next fifty years Huerfano was divided and divided again. Parts were absorbed into Baca, Bent, Prowers, Kit Carson, Cheyenne, Lincoln, Otero, Las Animas, Kiowa, Crowley and part of Pueblo.

Of historical note, the eastern grassland counties which were formed out of Huerfano contained Bent's Old Fort and Fort Lyon, and were the site of the Sand Creek Massacre.
