Fumeroles in Kilauea Caldera

Kilauea Caldera, Volcanoes National Park

Our first stop in Hawaii: Hilo, and the bike trip in Volcanoes National Park. Tourists in the foreground step gingerly across vents in cooling lava in Kilauea Caldera.

This area is one of the settings in Dan Simmons' excellent novel, Fires of Eden. Of course,
it was hotter in the book.

Wow, I had no idea of the size at first - until I saw the tiny people. Very impressive shot. And I'm with Bea - I don't think I'd go that close!

Those people really put the shot in perspective nicely.

Are they brave or stupid? Wouldn't get me down in there. Great shot.
