From Tupiza, we took a four day trip around the southwestern corner of Bolivia, which is a vast and magnificent area, with huge salt flats, colored lakes, surreal desert, flamingoes and fascinating rock formations. It was spectacular. The road was dirt and at times non-existent. Accommodations were very basic, but quaint and quite adequate. Our cook traveled with us and the food was great. It was cold and the altitude was high. The highlight of the trip was the Salar de Uyuni, the highest (3,653 meters) and largest salt flat in the world, covering 12,000 sq km.
Early in the first day, we got out and walked for a stretch because the road was washed out in several places where it wound precipitously up the mountain. One vehicle got stuck and after much digging and pushing, was pulled out by another vehicle. Shortly before dark, two of the vehicles became stuck as we forded a river. Again, after much digging (this time in the muddy river) and pushing, the two vehicles were successfully towed out of the river. The drivers and guides proved to be highly skilled.
We arrived at our hospedaje in a small community just as the sun was setting. After a short walk in the biting air we impatiently awaited our dinner. Immediately after dinner we crawled into our beds under a layers of 4 or 5 heavy blankets.
The main attractiion was the Salar de Uyuni. We took the tour through Tupiza Tours. They are located only in Tupiza. We were 100% satisfied with our experience. http://www.tupizatours.com
