Shimano ST-EF65 7 Speed shifters four-finger lever

Sometimes you want to change an older bike for a new functional purpose.

This 1993 Klein wanted for some flat bar shifters and brake levers that would work with the slightly pre-Ultegra Shimano 600 dual-pivot brakes. The dual-pivot are essentially cantilever in terms of cable pull and compatible levers.

It turns out there is a current cheap set of Shimano shifters/levers that was drop in for early 1990s Deore XT 3x 7 speed stuff!

The ST-EF65 with the four-finger brake lever should work fine with any cantilever or dual-pivot brake. V-brakes have a different cable pull. The 4-finger lever can do either, if you take out the screw and move the red plastic thing and put the cable barrel in the appropriate spot then put the screw back in. The 2-finger lever only works with V-brakes. V-brake levers pull twice as much cable, the leverage is at the brakes rather than at the lever. More leverage at the brakes means bigger/longer something, which it turns out gives more clearance for mud/fenders/tires so V-brakes pretty much won. Now we have disc brakes!
