Wiebengahal I

Maastricht (Limburg), Netherlands view map

The constructor Jan Gerko Wiebenga was involved as a designer for a great number of buildings that belong to the best of Dutch 20th-century heritage, such as the Van Nelle factory in Rotterdam, the Zonnestraal Sanatorium in Hilversum and the Sophia Hospital in Zwolle. One of his earliest works, the factory complex that he designed for the Société Céramique in Maastricht in 1912, was also one of the first reinforced concrete constructions in the Netherlands. The design of the concrete skeleton and the shell roof are of great architectural-historical value, while the space under the shell roof displays an exceptional architectonic beauty.
