'Papa' was standing guard over the chicks that were sleeping beside the fence. California Quail facts: Multiple California Quail broods may mix after hatching and are attended by all of the parents of those broods. Adults that engage in communal brooding live longer than adults that do not. ~ whatbird.com

Very nice image. Papa may be trying to distract you away from the chicks. One of them does that with me here. He poses and lets me approach far closer than usual, then starts leading me away from the family.
