The Kids

Southern Vancouver Island

When we first noticed the 'dirty' swans a few years ago we wondered if something was wrong with them and quickly learned that a Trumpeter Swan's plumage doesn't turn to its beautiful pure white shade until their second summer. These juvenile swans are experiencing the their first winter and their colouring is standard for that stage in a swans life.

Trumpeter Swan facts: Trumpeter Swan survival is based on a foundation of strong family bonds and crucial learned patterns of habitat use (traditions) acquired by associating with older more experienced birds, usually family members. Cygnets often remain with their broodmates through at least their first year and may regroup with their parents at the usual family wintering site in subsequent winters. These strong family bonds help cygnets continue to learn key migration routes and food resources from more experienced adults. ~ The Trumpeter Swan Society

A wonderful pose with the two looking at each other with the other two both looking in opposite directions. Love the light and color.

Lovely shot! It looks as though they stay in their family group for a while too. Very nice composition.
