This gallery contains mainly just two areas of the railway line. The Thomas Viaduct, and the Ilchester Tunnel. I took a few other miscellaneous photos en route to the two locations, which are about four miles apart.
The Thomas Viaduct, built in 1935, is the oldest viaduct still in use today, and I think the only curved viaduct. When it was being built, it was called "Latrobe’s Folly" because they thought it would collapse under its own weight. After a little research, I found all sorts of cool facts. For more information, visit The Maryland Memory Project, Civil Engineering in Maryland, and The Old Main Line.
I'm having trouble finding historical photos or drawings of the Ilchester Tunnel, built in 1903. Any help would be appreciated.
This is the CSX line, which used to be the B&O Railroad.
