This is sunspot number 1029, the most active sunspot of the year, in what has been a relatively quite year for sunspots so far. According to Spaceweather.com, this sunspot is a member of the new solar cycle 24 and has unleashed 6 C-class solar flares. The photo was taken with a Questar 3.5, an Identi-View solar filter, and a Nikon D80 at prime focus, (about 1300mm at f/14.5), 1/400 of a second at ISO 500 . It is a combination of 32 stacked frames, processed in Registax and Adobe Photoshop.
