In the center of the bridge is the helm, which could use a good polishing. The brass would never look like this on an active duty naval ship. Around the helm are instruments and gages that assist the helmsman in keeping the ship on course. They include a magnetic compass, a gyro compass repeater, rudder angle indicator and a ships speed indicator, The speed of the ship is controlled by the engine order telegraph (to the left of the helm). The the speed order given by who ever has the con (control or the ship), either the Captain or the Officer of the Deck, and is set by moving the handles for each engine. The order is shown in the engine and boiler room on the engine order telegraph repeater, such as ahead one-third. The engine room repesters have a control that they move to indicate that they have received and are executing the order.
