A few favorites from the British Museum

From my journal:

"Thursday 13 October - breakfast at Pret a Manger (croissant, banana). Tube to Russell Square / British Museum. Interior courtyard is fantastic. Saw Sutton Hoo treasures in rotating exhibit area (regular halls being renovated). Clocks and Watches. Then Elgin Marbles (slightly disappointing - not in great shape - wasn't aware that the Parthenon had been a powder store under the Turks and exploded), other Greek statuary. Lots of propaganda for why the Elgin marbles should stay. Egyptian collection (good, but not as much of a steal as the Elgin marbles) - decent overview of Egyptian history. Green cat outstanding. Assyrian exhibition (Nineveh palaces) outstanding. Quick run through Greek, Roman section upstairs (Portland vase) and Egyptian non-statuary stuff (swamped by people wanting to see mummies). Quick run to Japan section (quite small in comparison). Returned to hotel to prep for dinner."
