1/23/10 - November 2005 Viewers' Choice (Memorability: Low (score: 0.499 ) Pop:3.42)

Month #19 - Retrospective of Daily Photos posted from 5/04 to 12/09 (most viewers for the month)

While yesterday's viewers' choice did well in competitions, this one never saw the light of day but is one of my favorites (and the viewers as well in 11/05). Here's what I wrote back then when posting this as the daily photo for 11/03/05 -

11/3/05 - Early Morning at Lake Anne

Early morning at Lake Anne (Reston, VA) on a beautiful fall day. I had been there since an hour before sunrise looking for night & sunrise shots - all dogs. Had a nice breakfast at the lakeside coffee house shortly after taking this series which more than made up for my 4:30 wake up call. Getting up at ungodly hours is about the only possible downside to this great hobby, but the sights and sounds that greet you as sunrise approaches compensate.
Worked for quite a while trying to compose this shot. Many shots from many locations. Finally found this boat to work as a foreground element (although I had to walk on a "no tresspassing" dock a few feet to get this angle). The triangle formed by the folded blue canopy at the upper right points us into the scene and the near boat shows the detail of the two boats in the distance. (There are actually lots of good pointing triangles on that near boat.) I opted for an angle which minimized the sky since it was just plain blue; the sky worked better as part of an enlarged reflection rather than doing it the other way around. Who said that photography is just point & shoot?

i can see how the boat in the fg could help 'point' the eyes toward the main subject but i find it a tad distracting (my eyes are stuck at the fg boat).
otherwise a beautiful image (colours/reflection). :)

Definitely a keeper, Ed. The foliage is beautiful, and the comp is really terrific.
