Mount Morris is a town at the north end of Letchworth State Park and also the location of a US Army Corps of Engineers flood control dam. The dam is a "dry dam" meaning there is no reservoir backed up behind it unless the river flow exceeds normal levels by enough to cause downstream flooding. The dam rises 230 feet above the bed of the Genesee River and is 1028 feet in width across the river gorge. There is a visitor center there where the public can learn the background and history of the structure. There was an occasion in 1972 where the backed up water rose to within a few feet of the top, backing up a lake 17 miles long. It is believed the dam has prevented damage many, many times its construction cost during such events. The city of Rochester had suffered notable flood damage during weather events prior to the existence of the dam.
