During the 2013 Turkey Day Expedition centered on Shepherdstown, West Virginia, we visited Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. This historic town sits at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers. For this visit, temperatures were in the mid-30s (ºF) so we did not give this as much coverage as we might have. The Appalachian and C&O Trails cross here and there are still some active rail lines in what was a major transportation hub.
The town has a number of quite old buildings in a nice state of preservation, some housing informative museums. There was once a Federal arsenal here that was attacked by John Brown prior to the beginning of the Civil War. The town is noted for a number of significant events spanning two centuries.
