Two points:
First: Notice the newly-installed electric space heaters angling down above the seats. This was a big, big deal back then. Up to that point in time, there were no heaters. You just endured the cold temperature as best you could while sitting down for the evening to watch the game. If it was -20 C outside, and it often was then, you could only hope for modest relief inside the arena. Also, notice that we still played hockey wide open. No protective barriers on the boards between the ice and spectators. Pucks, and players(and worse-their sticks) would often come over the boards onto the fans.
Second: I say this in good spirit, BUT, I can't think of a better way, looking back now, than a tug-of-war on ice,(wearing street shoes) to cause broken arms, fractured knees and hips, or head injuries. Just look at those people on the left - 9 of 10 are close to involuntarily kissing the ice.
