Messier 56 is a magnitude 8.3 globular cluster in Lyra. It is approximately 33000 Ly distant. It is felt that because M56 has relatively few elements heavier than hydrogen and helium and lies along the plane in the Milky Way halo, that it may have been captured from a satellite galaxy.
