This is a reconstruction of the underground tomb or hypogeum of Yarhal from Palmyra (Wikipedia: Hypogeum or Hypogaeum (plural hypogea) literally means "underground", from Greek hypo (under) and gaia (earth)), brought here in its entirety and reconstructed in 1934-1935. Inside you see a triclinium-like room with three groups of diners reclining on couches, in their front the space widens and shows rows of graves (compartment shelves are built into the walls for bodies from the same family, in use over a period of two centuries. On each compartment a funerary bust of the deceased. Women are represented partially veiled to indicate death. An inscription states Yarhal built it for his family in AD 108 (quotes from Bradt guide).
