Nalıncı Mehmet Mimi Dede Türbesi

In the Üsküplü Caddesi this is the Nalıncı Mehmet Mimi Dede türbesi. On the web I found a story about Nalıncı (maker of clogs as used in hammams) Mehmet Mimi Dede, who supposedly was from Bergama ands died in 1592. The funeral services were witnessed by the sultan himself. A dome was placed on his grave and a fountain was placed in it. One story describes Sultan Murat III making one of those anonymous walks to see how the people fared we hear of more often. He finds a crowd discussing if the dead Nalıncı Mehmet Mimi Dede may be ritually washed, as he was, the crowd claims, a heretic. He led a non-religious life, drank lots of wine and on occasion held orgies with women invited on Fridays to his house. The sultan and his Shaykh al-Islam decide the dead body can not be left thus and do the job of washing it themselves, pray for him and have him buried. They next investigate and have the man’s wife brought to the palace to hear her version. Then it becomes clear that indeed Mehmet at the end of the day bought wine, but that it was to prevent others from drinking it and that he flushed it down the toilet. He indeed did not go to the mosque but prayed all night and also during daytime in his shop. He also brought unfortunate women home, advised them, made them repent and sent them home with money. His wife saw how people thought different and his trade declined, but he told her that he knew that upon his death the Shaykh al-Islam would wash his body and the Sultan would pour the water out. Hearing this Sultan Murad III immediately had the mausoleum built, and supported the wife until her death.
