The patriarchal church of St. George underwent successive phases of reconstruction before being given its present form, which results from the last restorations in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It does not have a dome. After the Fall of Constantinople, Christian buildings could not be covered with prominent domes and much church architecture went back to the ancient style of the Basilica.
