Nemrut 2006 09 1429.jpg

Five giant seated limestone statues, eight or nine meters high and identified by their inscriptions as deities, face outwards from the tumulus on the upper level of the east and west terraces. These are flanked by a pair of guardian animal statues – a lion and eagle – at each end. All heads have fallen down, and have been placed in front of their statue.
On this picture of the east terrace: the head of Heracles-Artagnes-Ares (the multiple names of this god indicating his syncretic nature) and of both guardian animals. The god’s head is about 2½ m in height.
