Ankara 2006 09 0276.jpg

Details from the monument on the Kızılay square.

This ‘Güven Anıtı’ (= Monument of Confidence) was erected in 1935. Its designers were two Austrians: Anton Hanak (1875-1934) and Josef Thorak (1889-1952).

Hanak was professor of monumental sculpture, first at the School of Applied Arts in Vienna (1913-1932) and later on at Vienna's Academy of Fine Arts (1932-1934).
Thorak became (in 1933) one of the two "official sculptors" of the Third Reich. Both artists were well known for their "grandiose monuments".

This one is 37 m long, the central stone block is 8 m high; the bronze figures are 6 m tall.
This picture shows the back side of it.
