437 Istanbul Kilims.jpg

view map

Kilim. From Balıkesir (N.W.-Anatolia). 18th or 19th century.
The design is typical for the (Türkmen) Yüncü tribe.

The large motifs are dual: Koçboynuzu’ (Ram’s horn) symbolizing male fertility, and ‘Tarak’ (comb), related with the protection of birth and marriage. If the weaver was not yet married, it would be the expression of her hope of a future happy marriage.

Correspondent: J.M.Criel, Antwerpen.
