Izmit_1466.jpg

Izmit, city of earthquakes.

On the picture: The Fevziye Mosque is the third one built on this spot. The first building, a 16th century work of Mimar Sinan collapsed during an earthquake in 1776. The second one, built during the reign of Mahmut II (1808-1838), went down in 1884 (another earthquake), leaving only one minaret standing. Ten years later, it was rebuilt again in a plain neoclassical style.
