These are some shots on the outside of the Kılıç Ali Paşa mosque, by Sinan, 1580. I have pictures of the inside elsewhere. This time I just took shelter for the rain. I enjoy this mosque because it is very quiet, and has a splendid court. However, inside it tends to become very dark and a bit opppressiive so on a rainy day I'd rather stay outside. Kılıç Ali Paşa was of Italian origin, converted to Islam and served in the fleet, he was one of the few officers doing who distinguished himself at the battle of Lepanto in 1571. As a reward Selim II appointed him Kaptan Paşa (Lord High Admiral), with Kılıç (sword) as an addition to his name.
