Antakya 8032.jpg

Another street scene: people write religious texts of welcome and blessing on their front doors. See the comment below for a further explanation. Antakya is a city where many people speak Arab, not all of them manage to write it, since only Turkish writing and language are taught. However, this may change, a sense of the value of cultural diversity is on the increase in Turkey. I hope diversity will not lead to division but will enrich daily life.

In Antakya you may find yourself sitting in a bus, everybody speaking Arabic. All of a sudden someone shouts "Ineçek var" (There's someone who wants to step off), the bus will stop, some conversation in Turkish, then on we go, in Arabic. Nice.

I contributed to an article in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung last year in which precisely that problem was treated. So I am aware of it, and not the only one.

"only Turkish writing and language are taught" in (most) schools. Since this is the official language. However, there are private cources that you can attend to learn a foreign language including Arabic. Antakya is a city where hundred thousands of arab is living. But nearly there is no Arab who knows reading and writing in Arabic.
