Kayseri Sahabiye Medresesi 2461

view map

From 1267, this former Kuran school now functions as a nice shopping centre.

It is also named ‘Sahip Ata Medresesi’, after the Seljuk vizier who had it built during the Ilhanlı domination over Anatolia (1243-1335). These ‘Ilhanlı / Ilkhanids’ are Iran based Mongols, who defeated the Seljuks at the Battle of Köse Dağ in 1243 and annexed their territory.

Sâhip Ata Fahrettin Ali held a number of high offices at the court of the Sultanate of Rum from the 1250s until his death in 1288. He became the dominant personality in Central Anatolia after the death of the Süleyman Pervane (= ‘Chancellor Süleyman’) in 1277. Just like his predecessor he was appointed by the Ilhanlı Khan to hold the position of chamberlain to the Konya palace of Seljuks sultan of Rûm, then vassals of the Mongols.
He is perhaps best remembered for the charitable foundations he established in cities across the Sultanate of Rum. Fahrettin’s sons, the Sahib Ataids (Turkish: Sahipataoğulları), established a short-lived principality centered in Afyon, which the neighboring Germiyanids absorbed ca. 1341.
