Köprülü mosque from kulliye court

view map

Along the Divan Yolu is the Köprülü kulliye (a complex around a mosque, with other facilities). Rather, the entrance is in a side street after you passed the mosque). It's from 1659-1660, founded by Mehmet Pasha and Fazil Ahmet Pasha, both from the Köprülü family, a family that is "considered to be the most distinguished family in the whole family of the Ottoman Empire" (quote from Strolling Through Istanbul, Redhouse Press 1989). Five members of this family were Grand Vezir in the second half of the 17th century and early 18th century.

This picture is taken in the court of the complex, straight ahead is the mosque of the complex (it started life as the lecture-room or dershane of the complex). To the right is a tomb of Mehmet the Cruel, according to legend the roof is only a metal grill, so the rain can cool the shade of the Grand Vezir, burning in hell, because he executed thousands when in office. Beside that building, in the graveyard, Mehmet Fuat Köprülü is buried, a distnguished historiand and sometime Minister for Foreign Affairs, who died in 1966.
