Istanbul Aya Sofya imperial entrance

view map

From the end of the 9th century this is the mosaic above the Emperors Portal. Christ sits on a jewel studded throne. He holds a book with “Peace be to you all. I am the light of the world.” Thus, with the blessing hand upward, he is known as Pantocrator (Creator of the Universe). At his feet Leo VI. In medallions Maria and an angel.

I have been informed from a dependable source that iconoclasm was ended by Leo's "grandmother" Theodora. The same source wrote: The mosaic is depicting a scene which took place late in Leo's reign- he was denied entrance to the church because he took a fourth wife and he threw himself to the ground and wept. The Patriarch commissioned the mosaic and placed it above the imperial doors as a warning to future emperors.

A Ayala Weiser requested permission to use my pictures for a seminar paper. That is alright, please indicate this site in the presentation if you can.

And do not make errors when writing mail addresses (this is a general remark but pertinent in this case also).

answer to the coment.
mr. Bulent's note is partly correct. In the archaiological musemu of the city there is a mosaic depicting the presentation of Jesus in the temple. It comes from kalendrehane jami- a byzantine church-and it is believed by the scholars to be earlier than the iconoclasm period.

that is a very interesting mosaic, where you can find the reason why in Istanbul there is no mosaic dating back further than the 9th century. 9th century is the end of iconaclastic period, where the emperors forbid the people to visit the churches and all icons, including mosaic and frescos were destroyed. It was Leo the 6th, who has ended that period and therefore, he kneels down in front of the Pantocrator and asks to be forgiven. Nice picture.
