Relief of a god

view map

Small relief of a god, standing on a stag (his sacred animal). Hittite Empire, 14th-13th century BC.
Steatite. Height: 6,4 cm. Width: 4,9 cm. From Yeniköy (Çorum province), not an excavation find.

The figure is a Hittite god of the countryside. On his head a pointed cap with a single horn; he is wearing a short skirt and shoes with turned-up toes. On his right hand, stretched out in front of him clenched in a fist, stands a bird, while in his left hand, crossed over his breast, he holds a sceptre with curved top. At his waist, a sword with crescent-shaped hilt and curved end.
