182Mountain King.jpg

view map

This statuette is 3,6 cm. from Bogazkale. It’s from the New Hittite kingdom, fourteenth century BC.

A pointed head-gear with horns is symbolic of divinities. The figure wears earrings in the extraordinarily large ears. His naked torso emerges from a stepped cone symbolizing mountain peaks. The hole in the base of the cone shows that it was meant to be fixed on to some object; it may have been held in the hand of a larger statue of a god.
