Butter mosque

Turkey, Adana view map

This mosque, the Yağ Camii (Yağ is butter, written with a special sign I can't print; so: Butter Mosque) is partly constructed from a church from the Middle Ages.

When I revisited the complex in September 2006 I found it had been restored to an almost brand new appearance. Time will add its patina in due course. See the next pictures.

Hi, dear guest,

I do not know, but as Armenian architecture can be quite distinctive, and since I do not recall such "marks", I presume it was "Greek". Oh, and it was not built "on" an earlier church, the building was transfered into a mosque, as so often happened, and extended somewhat. The Aya Sofia in Istanbul is an extreme example, but there are very many. The prayer niche gives them away, because that is not where the altar would have been, but slightly off centre. I recently put up a picture of the Murat I mosque in Bursa that reminded me strongly of a church, but was a mosque from the start. I concluded it may have been built by a Christian architect, or an architect influenced by Christian architecture. To see it, navigate to:http://www.pbase.com/dosseman/image/38757481

Kindest Regards,

Hi,

I am glad I could be of service. The original was underexposed and I thought of leaving it out. I now am glad I kept it in. Did you move to another part of the country, or another country even?
