Adana is a crowded and busy city, where some nice old buildings stand a bit lost amidst a sea of modern buildings. It’s generally hot and a bit suffocating, and I was not surprised when I found people held a kind of siesta, some sleeping on empty market stalls, others even on the pavement, or in the shadow of a mosque. I used to think it is not a very pleasant city, but I have since changed my mind and like it. I advice you to pay a visit to the archaeological museum and visit the Ulu Mosque that is a splendid building. Compare it to the grand modern mosque near the river, close to the museum almost where the old bus station used to be. Also just tramping about makes you like the city a bit more, it has some hidden treasures and a good atmosphere. A March 2005 visit taught me that great improvements have been made in its appeal, for instance along the river, that now is a pleasant walking area rather than the mess it was. March 2008 I added pictures from the Ethnography Museum and of some of the suburbs, where huge apartment blocks show how the city is spreading out. And in September that year I added some more pictures. And as if that was not enough I went there in December again. I'm sure I'll return.

One reason to keep returning is its excellent position as a "traffic hub". I used Adana as a basis to visit Ceyhan, Tumlu Castle, Yumurtalık, Yılankale or Snake Castle, Kozan, Anavarza and saw a Kurdish Spring Festival near Ceyhan. And for -mainly- Americans there is Incirlik.
ADANA

Adana; bazı güzel eski binaların, modern binalar denizinin arasında kaybolduğu kalabalık ve hareketli bir şehir. Genelde sıcak ve biraz bunaltıcı; insanları bir çeşit siesta yaparken bulduğuma şaşırmadım. Bazıları boş tezgahların üzerinde, hatta kimisi kaldırımda veya bir cami gölgesinde uyuyordu. Çok hoş bir şehir değil, ama müzeyi ve Ulu Cami’yi (görkemli bir bina) ziyaret etmenizi tavsiye ederim. Ulu Cami’yi, eski terminalin olduğu yerde, müzenin yakınındaki büyük, modern camiyle karşılaştırın. Ayrıca, sadece öylesine dolaşmak şehri biraz daha sevmenize neden oluyor, şehrin gizli kültür varlıkları ve iyi bir atmosferi var. Mart 2005’te yaptığım bir ziyaret, şehrin daha çekici bir yer haline gelmesi için çok yol katedildiğini gösterdi, örneğin eskiden korkunç olan nehir kenarı, şimdi hoş bir yürüyüş yolu.
