Monument for Fethiy Bey (1991-1914) who was Turkey’s first aviation martyr. He graduated from the naval academy and became an officier in the navy. He was trained in England. He joined the air forces as a captain. In 1914 he attempted to fly from Istanbul to Cairo for the first time and was killed when his plane crashed at Taberiye near Damascus. In 1914 our town, which was previously called Meğri, was renamed as Fethiye in honour of Fethi Bey.
