Fethiye is for tourist purposes a yachting resort, and has fine beaches not too far off. It also has some fine Lycian graves hewn from the rocks, and one can from here visit Kayaköy, a village that was almost completely deserted when, after the Turkish War of Independence, as exchanges of citizens took place between Greece and Turkey, many "Greek Turks" fleeing the country. It now is a ghost town, with all the charm that implies. Better not think about the horror that preceded the present status.

Fethiye, turistik amaçlardan dolayı bir yatçılık merkezi ve çok uzak olmayan hoş sahilleri var. Ayrıca kayalardan yontulmuş, güzel Likya mezarları var. Oradan Kayaköy’e de gidilebilir; Türk Kurtuluş Savaşı’nın ardından, Türkiye ile Yunanistan arasındaki nüfus mübadelesi gerçekleştikten ve Yunanlı Türkler ülkeden ayrıldıktan sonra, bu köy neredeyse tamamen boşalmış. Sahip olduğu sezilen tüm cazibesine rağmen, orası şu anda bir hayalet kasaba. Şimdiki durumunda öne çıkan korkuyu düşünmemek en iyisi.

i`ve been there twice and i strongly advice everybody to go to spend there their holiday.i also have a lot of pictures,and i can just tell that i love Turkey anf Fethiye,my boyfriend is turkish

Fethiye is an amazing place...especially the lycian tombs..and other antiquities arround...about Kayakoy ..there is a desert greek village...that impessed me so much...

Thanks Nick, I found in your galleries the door of greek churh of Tajiarxi in Kayakoy (greek LEVISI). Levisi was the village of my father in TURKEY. In this year 2006, I visited Turkey in August (Megri-ÌÜêñç) and kayakoy (Levisi-Ëéâßóé) and in October Istabul (Konstantipole-Êùíóôáíôéíïýðïëç).

Hello, Agreement between Ankara and Athens for an exchange of populations seems to be BEFORE the Lausanne treaty: Lausanne Treaty (from: The Treaties of Peace 1919-1923, Vol. II, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, New York, 1924.) The Lausanne Treaty was signed on 24 July 1923 by the British Empire, France, Italy, Japan, Greece, Romania, and the "Serbo-Croat-Slovene" State on one part and Turkey on the other. ARTICLE 14. The islands of Imbros and Tenedos, remaining under Turkish sovereignty, shall enjoy a special administrative organisation composed of local elements and furnishing every guarantee for the native non-Moslem population in so far as concerns local administration and the protection of persons and property. The maintenance of order will be assured therein by a police force recruited from amongst the local population by the local administration above provided for and placed under its orders. The agreements which have been, or may be, concluded between Greece and Turkey relating to the exchange of the Greek and Turkish populations will not be applied to the inhabitants of the islands of Imbros and Tenedos. ARTICLE 142. The separate Convention concluded on the 30th January, 1923, between Greece and Turkey, relating to the exchange of the Greek and Turkish populations, will have as between these two High Contracting Parties the same force and effect as if it formed part of the present Treaty. Hi, Thanks for your comment and praise. As for the forces behind the exchange, I have, for instance, here Alan Palmers "The decline and fall of the Ottoman Empire", he claims (pg. 263) "it was not until after the Lausanne treaty was ratified that bilateral agreements between Ankara and Athens provided for an exchange of populations. More than a million Greeks left Asia Minor; some 350.000 Turks emigrated from Macedonia to seek a new life in Anatolia. Both these uprooted communities suffered great hardship from the drawing of the new frontier lines". This implies, the way I read it, that at least the exchange was not in the treaty proper. I will look into the matter further, and do agree that "flee" may not be the proper word. If you know of some authoritative source (in English, French, German, Italian or just plain Dutch), let me know. Reading Turkish sources is somewhere in the future for me, if at all. I'll leave this message on the page itself too. Dick

Dick I am a frequent visitor to your wonderful galleries, especially those about Turkey. You do a fine job of portraying Turkey as it is. In fact I and my wife just returned to North Cyprus from a short vacation in Fethiye. I would like to offer a correction to the description at the top of this page. You indicate that "after the Turkish War of Independence, as exchanges of citizens took place between Greece and Turkey, many Greek Turks fleeing the country." Firstly the Greeks did not flee of their own will, bu were forced to leave as per the "exchange of populations" agreed during the Lausanne Treaty. Of course, the same unfortunate thing happened to Turks living in Greece at the time. This is one of the most traumatic events in the history of Turkey and Greece; as a result many people suffered immensely on both sides. Regards. Ömer Yagiz
