Lockyer's Peppermint

Eucalyptus lockyeri subsp lockyeri, flower buds

The shape of the flower buds including their cap (operculum) is often useful to identify eucalypts - every 'trick' is useful as there's over 800 species (Australia-wide) to distinguish.

Like little pixie caps. If this tree smells like its name it should be easy identification...

What interesting looking flowers, and very well captured. I had no idea, either, that there are over 800 species of eucalypts in Australia, and I used to live there ;-).

800 species of Eucalyptus?? Amazing. Good thing the seeds can help with ID. These ones are particularly appealing in shape and colour. V

800 is about the number of North American bird species - getting a photo of each is maybe an achievable goal; identifying over 800 species of eucalypts would be too daunting a task for me!
