Southern Cassowary

best viewed at original size

Normally a denizen of tropical rainforest, this one has wandered just beyond the edge – there was forest on the other side of the road.
He – I think it is male based on smaller size (females are larger) – has a swelling on one foot, but wasn’t limping and otherwise appeared healthy.
Unfortunately, too many Southern Cassowaries become road casualties. This is particularly of concern because the isolated Wet Tropics population (where I took this photo) is estimated to number 4,400 individuals.
A process is in place to minimise problems on roads – I reported this to a 24-hour hot-line and they promised to post a sign “Recent Cassowary sighting” on the road to warn drivers and attempt to slow them down.

This is a wonderful shot. It begs the question "Why did the Cassowary cross the road...?"

Thanks again for providing information on these animal images. Australia is unique in the world, as an island continent.

excellent capture of this guy in this "strange" place for him.

How lucky you were to catch this guy and great for us to share :) Certainly a very different bird - looks like it's related to the ostrich.

Terrific image of this wonderful bird. I understand they can be ornery.

What an AMAZING sight. I can't tell you how many times we tried to see one of these birds but never succeeded. It is such a shame that so many are killed on roads, very sad.

'Big Foot' is alive - very colorful head and neck!

An excellent portrait of this handsome large colorful bird.

How neat! Nice shot of this "dangerous" fellow. Nice too that they are trying to protect them. I hate seeing dead animals on the roads. So sad.

That looks to be a pretty big bird.. I suspect they could do so damage to a car..
