Banyan (Ficus virens) - the Cathedral Fig

Rays of afternoon sunlight filter through the rainforest canopy on to this grand old individual which is known locally as The Cathedral Fig.
Banyan begins life as a seedling growing as an epiphyte on another tree. It eventually extends it roots to the ground, encircles its host and strangles it.
