Robbin, thanks for posting the bus info for getting to South Beach. I rode that #6 bus so darn many times getting to downtown and South Beach, starting in the late 50's thru 1963 or 1964 when I started driving. When I started riding it I had to walk from W. 9th Lane to Palm Avenue because the #6 bus went north on Palm to 65th and then did a round the block maneuver to start southbound on Palm to downtown via Okeechobee Road, NW 36th Street (later the Airport Expressway to Biscayne) to Biscayne Boulevard and then south to downtown.

I wrote to Dade County Transit and pointed out how many people lived west of Red Road and that they should modify the route so we didn't have to walk so far and I suggested a loop to the west along 49th Street and then north on W. 8th Avenue to 68th Street and then east to Palm and then southbound. I drew a map to show exactly what I was talking about. The county transit planner replied with a nice letter and compromised on the route change. The northbound leg was changed from totally being on Palm to going west on W. 49th Street from Palm to Red Road, then north on Red Road to W. 65th Street, then east on W. 65th Street to Palm and then south on Palm to Okeechobee Road and then on to downtown Miami. They thanked me for the suggestion and shortly thereafter the route was changed saving a lot of us the extra walk from Red to Palm and then Palm to Red on the return. Plus, if you just missed the bus at Red and 56th you still had a chance to catch it southbound on Palm if you ran like hell.

We had to change buses on Flagler Street at the time to get to South Beach and the closest point back then to South Beach was the bus stop at the northwest corner of Washington Avenue and 5th Street. I really hated the walk to South Beach from that point because it seemed like forever and all the old ladies on all the hotel porches would stare at us as we passed by.

I have the same surfboard rental shops and bagel bakery memories. Those bagels were delicious fresh out of the oven. Five cents for one and a dozen for 50 cents were the prices I remember. Those were grand times indeed and the visual sights on South Beach were wonderful every time I went there.

Don Boyd, and Don Gwinn, I was A Surfer, when I Went to Palm Springs JR. High, in 1965- 1966, and I Surfed, to the Right of The South Beach Pier, and in front of the Dog Track's Parking Garage. My Good Friend and Neighbor Back then,----- Rod Bauza, now Deceased, and I Would take the # 6 Bus, from Gratigny RD., and Red RD., to By the Omni, and then Transfer to The K or L Bus, which would take us to Washington Avenue, By Lincoln RD. Mall, and then we'd walk to Ocean Drive, and Rent SurfBoards from The SurfBoards Hawaii Shop, across the Street, From The Pier, and we'd surf a 1/2 a Day, and Go Home to Hialeah, the same way. Oh, and Lunch, was a Bag Of Wonderful Hot Fresh Bagels, From Beach Bagel, next to The SurfBoard Rental Store, and To Drink, We had a can of Pepsi, from the Machine inside Beach Bagel, And Yes Gentlemen, The Place was Crawling, With Beautiful Girls !!!!!!!!!!! Those girls from the 60's on South Beach were downright awesome, weren't they? I was there many days from 1962 to 1966, especially in the summer. Congrats on your 40 years of marriage, I'm glad you made it this long.
